2018-2019 ANNUAL RECITAL
At A Glance
Our annual spring recital gives our dancers a chance to showcase the progress they have made throughout the year to their families and friends. This highlight video captures some of the more meaningful moments from the show, but to watch the entire video, click here.
DANCE CLASSES
Structure
For every dance class, we follow a thorough and pre-planned format which was created to optimize the team's goals of improving mental health, self esteem, and discipline through dance.
5 minutes
WELCOME CIRCLE
Each class begins sitting in a circle on the ground. The teacher will proceed to share with the group the "Word of the week". Some past examples are "gratitude", "focus", "friendship", and "strength". This chosen word will be the focus of the class, and all activities will revolve around that word. We encourage our students to find ways to implement this word into everyday actions even outside of dance class.

WARM UP
Since we teach multiple styles of dance (hip hop, jazz, lyrical), the styles warrant different types of warm ups. Not only does this help with strength and flexibility, but it gets the students minds ready and in sync with the music.

ACTIVITY
Each month focuses on one particular style and with that, each week builds on improving previous skills. We work in the center, across the floor, and on the last class of every month we do "show and tell" where the kids pair up and make up a dance to show their peers.

THE COMBO
As previously stated, each month is a different style of dance. The students will continue to work on the same dance combination, building upon every week, for a month. This provides them with the ability to practice outside of class to show progress each week and helps to strengthen their long term memory.

REWARDS
Research has shown that rewards tremendously improve motivation and self esteem among all age groups. We use simply techniques of rewarding our students in class to express our appreciation for their hard work and progress. If the class is on their best behavior and everyone is focused consistently through class, we will let them vote on a song to freestyle dance to at the end of class. If someone does something really special that "wow's" the teacher, the student is able to choose the warm up song for the next class.

"CHECK UPS"
Three times a year (first class in September, January, last class in May) we conduct "check ups" for our students. This is basically a piece of paper that asks simple mental health related questions about stress, school, family, friends, self esteem, dance class, etc. specifically in relation to dance. Not only is this very important for teachers to gain insight in their student's lives and how dance is affecting them, but it is incredible to see how aspects of their lives have been impacted by dance.
